Buckeye Trail Visitors Guide
Buckeye Trail
The Buckeye Trail is a 1,300-mile trail that passes through the Hocking Hills as it loops its way around Ohio. Since 1959, which marked the dedication of its first 20 miles in Hocking County, the Ohio Buckeye Trail has invited hiking enthusiasts and other outdoor-lovers to explore the natural wonders of Ohio.
Today, the Buckeye Trail is divided into 24 sections, all named after nearby towns or important features. Three consecutive sections of the Ohio Buckeye Trail — New Straitsville, Old Man's Cave and Scioto Trail — pass through the area in and around Hocking Hills. Each is remarkable in its own way. The Buckeye Trail's New Straitsville section goes through Wayne National Forest, Ohio's only national forest, on its way to the Old Man's Cave section. Attractions along the Old Man's Cave section of the Ohio Buckeye Trail include Lake Logan State Park, Hocking State Forest, Conkle's Hollow, Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave. The Scioto Trail section of the Buckeye Trail travels through such notable places as the Tar Hollow State Forest. Campsites (both modern and primitive) are available at all three. Parts of the southern portions of the Ohio Buckeye Trail are included on two national trails: the American Discovery Trail, a trail crossing over 15 states to link the East and West coasts, and the North Country National Scenic Trail, which traverses seven northern states.
The Buckeye Trail is maintained by the Buckeye Trail Association, a nonprofit group of volunteers. Among the Ohio Buckeye Trail Association's special events is the annual "Go to Blazes Day," a time when volunteers spruce up the blue blazes that mark the trail.
