Shoot the Hills Photography Contest

Major photography competition takes aim at Ohio’s Hocking Hills

 

Wildflower Walk, Habitat Restoration and Shoppe the Hills enhance weekend

 

 

Logan, Ohio – “Shoot the Hills,” The seventh annual, Hocking Hills nature photography competition, takes place April 17-19, 2009 in southeast Ohio’s dazzling Hocking Hills region.  Photographers will be given the opportunity to compete fore more than $7,000 in prizes using images they capture in some of the most stunning scenic areas found anywhere in the Midwest. 

 

 

Competition for this three-day event begins Friday, April 17 at at the Hocking Hills State Park Dining Lodge. Amateurs, students and professional photographers are invited to enter the contest, which has drawn photographers from around North America. Registration is available at www.ShootTheHills.com or by calling (740) 774-6243.

 

 

With both film and digital and junior and adult divisions, contestants will have 24 hours to take and return photos in the following categories: Wildlife; Flora; Landscape; Human Interest in Nature; and Abstracts in Nature. The $35 registration fee ($30 if pre-registered) includes a CD for burning digital images, but computers are not supplied.  Each photographer may submit five photographs, but no more than two in any one category. The final awards ceremony and “Photographers’ Choice” slide show take place Sunday at

 

 

SHOP, HIKE & HELP

 

“Shoppe the Hills Artisan & Craft Show” also begins Friday, April 18 and runs through Sunday, April 19. Each day offers live demonstrations of artistry and crafts on the lawn of the Hocking Hills Dining Lodge, including chainsaw carving, blacksmithing and other artisans.  On Saturday, visitors also have the choice of the Annual Wildflower Walk at Lake  Hope  State Park or the Annual Wildflowers & Waterfalls Hike through Ash  Cave. The Lake  Hope walk features a 1.5-mile trek taking visitors along Raccoon Creek where they’ll experience an incredible flush of wildflowers.  The Ash  Cave hike is a one-mile hike around the largest and most impressive recess cave in Ohio, which features a 90 foot waterfall.

 

 

Visitors will also have the opportunity to help maintain the spectacular natural habitats that draw them to the Hocking Hills.  During “Hands on Habitat,” visitors can help sow seeds and discover first-hand the keys to ensuring that healthy wildlife habitats continue to thrive in the region.  Also on Saturday, a pancake lunch will feature real Hocking Hills maple syrup.
